Mark Whitcomb has left his imprint on a lot of Madison-made records as co-owner and engineer at DNA Studios, and he also lends his guitar chops to local band Lorenzo’s Music. Here, he’ll play a solo set with an acoustic guitar and some beats and loops, and Lorenzo’s lead singer Tom Ray will join him to sing some of that band’s songs. Whitcomb describes his own originals as “neo-soul” with an improvisational bent, “more Ray LaMontagne or Nick Drake than [obvious Lorenzo’s Music influence] Tom Waits.” Former Madisonian Anna Laube returns from California to release her new album Pool All The Love * Pool All The Knowledge, which follows up the pleasant, intimate singer-songwriter tunes on 2006's Outta My Head. Also playing: Zachary Scot Johnson.

This Sunday at 2pm Lorenzo's Music will be on "Support Your Scene". A local music show on Madison Student Radio WSUM 91.7 FM promoting songs from our new album "Bazar", which you can download for free on our audio page.

WSUM is very pro-local music. They have shows dedicated to local music, and love to work with local (and not-so-local) bands.

We did an impromptu performance on the show last year showcasing some of the songs from the new album that we were in the studio recording at the time. You can listen to that whole show here on our website.

It's here! The new album "Bazar" by Lorenzo's Music.

Here is a review of the new album by Tom Laskin of The Isthmus:

Bazar, from longtime cabaret rockers Lorenzo's Music, is a surreal sonic safari that finds leaders Tom Ray and Mark Whitcomb fiddling about with both discombobulated pop tunes and slew-footed R&B-inflected rockers that owe a lot to everyone's favorite ash can saint, Tom Waits. The CD's bass-heavy lead cut, "Old Old Story," has a bittersweet swagger about it that ought to appeal to both Waits fans and the legions of folks who were thrilled by Leonard Cohen's mid-life move into contemporary cabaret fare.

The same is true of the louche rumba "All's Good That Ends Well." As always, Lorenzo's stylish, gravel-voiced singer Ray is in complete control of his striking pipes as he dips and sways through a fractured musical landscape peopled by beautiful losers, tempestuous lovers and twisted back-alley creatures who look good even when they're falling hard.

The CD's packaging may be simple, but don't let that fool you. These guys are one of the most sophisticated outfits in the area. If they were based on one of the coasts, they'd be penning soundtracks.

The new album is being mastered. So we're in the studio working on the live show. We've added an organ and second guitar to the line up as well. Soon the album will be available here, free to download. Plus, a new site design is coming as well. Hopefully all will be happening real soon, so stay tuned!

Well if you've been watching our netcasts you may have realized that we did not meet our Valentine's Day deadline for finishing the new album. Mark and I one night had a new song and decided we wanted to add it to the new album as well. It's been tracked and mixed and we're pretty happy with it. Although it did take a chunk of our time to do so. We are however done recording and mixing now, all that's left is mastering the tracks. So it's almost here.

In addition the artwork and design of the album and new website is underway too. We hope to be up and running very shortly. We will release the new songs on the website as soon as all this is finished and you will be able to purchase new CD's soon after that. We'll keep you posted.

So....2007...how was it?

The year was pretty good for us. Most of it was working on new songs, ideas and the like. Plus the addition of two new children for Mark Whitcomb and Bryan Elliott (seperatly, not together.) And we've branched into the realm of video casting in relation to the new material we've been working on.

What do you have on tap for 2008?

We have a new album in the works as well as creating a new website. And, just like the last time our new album will be free for download.

Lorenzo's Music are posting weekly netcasts to their website (www.lorenzosmusic.com) to unveil their forthcoming album, one song at a time. But the videos don't feature the band performing.

"I'm a fan of old movies and retro commercials," explains the local rock band's lead vocalist, Tom Ray. "So I searched some public domain archives and chose a film."
